Neville Staple / Police and Thieves (2012)
With the amazing success of London 2012 and all of the fantastic olympic stories coming from our capital, it’s easy to forget that it’s only been a year since the terrible riots that rocked London and many other UK cities. Ska legend, Neville Staple of The Specials experienced some of the chaos and destruction at first hand and was inspired to record his own version of the Junior Murvin Reggae classic, “Police and Thieves” (also covered by The Clash) with co-contributor, Leee John.
MGL Media and Indigo Blue Media were recently commissioned to create a music video that would reflect the social relevance of the song’s lyric and compliment Neville’s unique arrangement of the track. Due to their busy schedules and work commitments, Neville’s and Leee’s filming took place over 2 separate days and in different locations – Neville within a studio environment and Leee John performed the track around the street’s of Harlesden, where many of the London riots had taken place.
The performance footage was intercut with projection and physical fire effects to create a promo that really captures the feel of the track.
It was an honour to work with someone of Neville’s stature and great to help to create something positive from the violence and disruption that blighted our towns and cities last Summer. As ever, we would love your feedback on the video, so feel free to retweet, share and get in touch. Now let’s celebrate how far we’ve come and get back to watching Team GB win some more medals!
